DR. KARA BALLENGER

“My love for animals and passion for science led me to veterinary medicine. I enjoy working with pets and their families to ensure they live long, happy, and healthy lives.”

Dr. Kara Ballenger is a Kansas City native who grew up in Weatherby Lake. Her interest in veterinary medicine began at 13 when her family welcomed their first dog, Kingsley. Taking care of pets and helping neighbors with their animals sparked her curiosity about veterinary care. By 16, she was working as a kennel attendant at a local clinic, solidifying her decision to pursue a career in animal health.

She attended the University of Missouri, earning both her undergraduate degree and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, graduating from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. A unique part of her journey included shadowing veterinarians at the Singapore Zoo while visiting her parents overseas, an experience that deepened her appreciation for the field.

As a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Dr. Ballenger enjoys all aspects of small animal medicine and values the relationships she builds with pet owners. She is dedicated to providing high-quality, compassionate care tailored to each patient’s needs.

Outside of work, Dr. Ballenger stays busy with her husband, Mike, a pharmacist, and their two children. Their family life revolves around school activities, sports, and various hobbies, and they love traveling whenever they can.

At home, their furry family members include Marvel, a mixed-breed dog, and two playful cats, Truman and Zou-Zou.

In her free time, Dr. Ballenger enjoys jogging, cooking, and getting lost in a good book.
